A compact motion that works when under pressure

Anytime you intend to hit the ball hard, (ie. Serves, overheads, hard hit groundstrokes), it is imperative that you are hitting in a balanced position.  If you lack balance you will miss.  An easy overhead and a very difficult overhead look very similar, therefore early & accurate judgement coupled with swift balanced footwork will facilitate the easy execution of the overhead technique.

Overhead: Simple Technique for Abbreviated Service

When it comes to overheads, especially in pressure situations, an abbreviated service technique can be effective. Here’s a simple and compact motion that works well, particularly when you need to hit the ball hard:

Abbreviated Service Technique:

  • Balanced Position:

    • Before attempting an overhead shot, ensure that you are in a balanced position. Whether it’s serves, overheads, or forehand drives, hitting with balance is crucial for accuracy and power.

  • Judgment and Footwork:

    • Recognize the importance of early and accurate judgment when preparing for an overhead shot. A well-executed overhead and a challenging one may look similar, so swift and balanced footwork is essential. Anticipate the trajectory of the ball early to position yourself optimally.

  • Compact Motion:

    • Opt for an abbreviated service technique, keeping the motion compact. This is particularly effective when you need to generate power quickly, such as during overhead shots. A shorter motion allows for faster execution, crucial for reacting to fast-moving balls.

  • Quick Decision-Making:

    • In pressure situations, decision-making needs to be quick and precise. Assess the incoming ball, determine the appropriate overhead technique, and execute the shot with confidence. Trusting your judgment and practicing quick decision-making will enhance your ability to handle overheads effectively.

  • Swift Footwork:

    • The ability to move swiftly to the optimal position is key for successful overheads. Work on your footwork to ensure you can adjust quickly to the ball’s trajectory and maintain balance during the shot.

  • Practice Under Pressure:

    • Simulate pressure situations during practice to enhance your ability to perform abbreviated overheads when it matters most. Practice scenarios where you need to react quickly and hit powerful overheads with a compact motion.

Remember that simplicity often thrives under pressure. By refining your overhead technique to be simple yet effective, you increase your chances of executing successful overhead shots in various game situations. Regular practice and a focus on quick decision-making will contribute to your confidence in handling overheads, even in challenging moments on the court.
