Welcome to this comprehensive course on tennis coaching, designed to offer a unique and effective perspective for both tennis coaches and players. Throughout my years of experience in teaching tennis, I have honed an approach that helps players understand the intricacies of the game AND facilitates tangible improvement.

The structure of this course is tailored to provide insights into the various aspects of learning & playing tennis, breaking down the game in a manner that has proven to be easily digestible and beneficial for players. Drawing from my experiences, I have incorporated notes in each section that can be valuable for coaches in running lessons.

Whether you are a seasoned coach looking to refine your methods or simply interested in another perspective,  or a player eager to elevate your game, this course aims to be a valuable resource. Incorporating energy into coaching is a central theme in this philosophy. The coach’s energy influences the frequency and efficiency of shots, the clarity in drill descriptions, and the overall execution of drills. The energy a coach brings is considered the “secret sauce” that enhances the learning experience.

The course will delve into different components of playing and learning tennis, presented in an easily digestible format. The goal is to empower young coaches to develop their coaching philosophy. Emphasis will be placed on helping students coach themselves by providing a complete understanding of how to make changes and the reasons behind those changes.

Additionally, the course will highlight best practices in safely running large groups, showcasing effective techniques for managing and maximizing the potential of group lessons. The Five Pillars of skill to learn and play tennis

The five components  of playing tennis are  

Technique, Movement, Judgment, Timing, and Competition 

they form the fundamental pillars of playing and learning tennis. Let’s briefly outline each component:

  • Technique:

    • Technique refers to the correct and efficient execution of various strokes, such as forehand, backhand (topspin and slice), serve, volley, and more. Developing proper technique is essential for consistency, power, and injury prevention.

  • Movement:

    • Movement involves footwork, positioning, and agility on the court. Good movement enables players to reach the ball efficiently, maintain balance, and optimize their court coverage.  We focus on the movement around the ball and the movement around the court.

  • Judgment:

    • Judgment in tennis is the ability to assess and anticipate the trajectory, speed, and bounce of the ball accurately. It also includes decision-making regarding shot selection, and the strategy of how to play the oncoming ball.

  • Timing:

    • Timing is crucial for executing shots at the right moment. It involves the synchronization of the player’s movements and technique with the ball’s trajectory, ensuring optimal contact and control. Proper timing enhances shot accuracy and power.  We consider the timing of the backswing and the forwardswing and the timing of the footwork.

  • Competition:

    • The competitive aspect involves understanding match dynamics, strategy, and adapting to different opponents. Sub components of the pillar are: mental toughness, concentration, emotional control, Strategic intelligence, Match fitness, Grit, courage/fearlessness, will to win,  killer instincts,  and more.

Throughout this course, we will delve into the specific elements that make up each component. Whether it’s breaking down the mechanics of a particular stroke, emphasizing the importance of specific footwork patterns, discussing decision-making on the court, honing and teaching timing skills, or understanding the dynamics of competitive play, each component contributes to a holistic understanding and playing of tennis.

Some extra notes on Starting a tennis lesson.

 

Starting a tennis lesson involves considering several crucial factors that will shape the session’s progress. These factors include:

  • Player(s) Existing Skill Level, Age, Physical Abilities:

    • Tailor your coaching approach based on the skill level of the players, their age, and physical abilities. Beginners, juniors, and adults will require different coaching strategies.

  • Number of Players:

    • Whether it’s a private lesson or a group setting, the number of players greatly influences the dynamics of the lesson.  Understand the nuances of various lesson types, such as private, group, and large group lessons. Each type has unique considerations, especially in managing large groups effectively.

  • Lesson Resources:

    • Assess the availability of courts, balls, racquets, and the presence of assistant coaches. These resources impact the structure and execution of the lesson.

  • Purpose or Focus of the Lesson:

    • Clearly decide the goals and focus of the lesson. Whether it’s skill development, strategy, or fitness, having a clear purpose helps guide the session.  Once you decide on the lesson focus you will decide on the drills that most apply to that focus.
