Working with Move Your Feet Sports
Detailed Counselor Training
Minding the Children
- The Move Your Feet Sports number one rule for interacting with our participants is this: Never say or do anything to a camp participant that you would be unwilling to do or say if their parent were standing beside you.
- NEVER use foul language while working at the camp. Children will hear you and repeat it. Children do not understand sarcasm and may take your words literally—be mindful of what you say and how you say it.
- If a child is disrupting the group or creating a safety risk, ask them to sit down. A junior counselor may escort them to a designated area. The camp director or assistant director will take over. Once the child has calmed down, reintegrate them as soon as possible.
- If a child is hurt in any way, care for them immediately. Report ALL incidents—no matter how small—to the camp director or assistant director. This includes minor injuries or emotional distress.
- Some players may have medical needs (e.g. allergies or diabetes). You will be informed—stay aware and attentive.
- No participant may leave the facility unattended. Bathroom trips must be supervised. Large groups require two counselors and must be split into smaller groups. Check bathroom cleanliness afterward and report issues.
- Starburst rewards must be given intentionally (effort, attitude, performance). Avoid random distribution.
- Phone use is not allowed during camp hours. Limited use during lunch may be permitted but can be revoked.
- During training, facility risks (range, courts, mini golf) will be reviewed.
Minding the Counselors
Verbal or active bullying or harassment will not be tolerated. We support each other at all times. If you feel uncomfortable, report it immediately. If the concern involves the director, speak to the assistant director.
Camp Setup
Setting up each sport is the responsibility of counselors. Be ready before sessions begin to set the tone for high-energy activities.
Golf
At 8:30 AM, place bay reservation sheets. Collect and prepare balls. Be ready to organize players before 9:00 AM.
Tennis
Set up courts after watering. Each court must have balls, baskets, and markers. Courts should look engaging and energetic before players arrive.
Drill Technique
High energy is essential. Coaching is led by the camp director. Counselors reinforce instructions while feeding balls.
Golf Drills
Rule #1: Only one person in a bay at a time.
Focus on repetition, safety, and engagement. Switch drills when energy drops and always have the next activity ready.
During mini golf, teach etiquette such as being quiet, maintaining pace, and respecting play.
Tennis Drills
Fast feeding is required. Minimize wait times and ensure high-quality feeds.
Maintain efficiency (“pit crew” style). Use demonstrations and adapt drills to player level.
Drill Rotations
Transitions should be smooth. Avoid unnecessary ball collection when possible.
Senior counselors feed or rally; junior counselors manage rotations and ball pickup.
Be ready to switch drills if needed. All groups rotate together unless otherwise directed.
